Homeschool Fun with Flashcards

    I haven't posted school in a bit but, we are still working on it.  Today we worked with flashcards.  Flashcards are very easy to get.  You can even pick up a pack for a buck at the dollar store.

  There are many ways to utilize a box of flashcards.

 1.  Match uppercase with lowercase letters.  Lay out all of one set of cards and then give out the other set.  Cards don't need to be in order.

2.  Next the cards were then put in order.  This part always amuses me because he sings the alphabet song so many times.

3.  Identify the items on the back.  Some of the pictures are harder then others but, it helps him to form the picture and letter together.

  I find it very helpful in him recognizing letters by several repetitive activities weekly.  Reading, and writing need to be done several times a week.  I especially see the retention when he's learning new words.

  Teaching him and watching him learn warms my heart and I'm glad I can be a part of the process.  I'm glad I can build the foundation.

School with Letter I

  So my printer is on the blitz.  I hate how every few years it seems I need a new one.  So when this happens we have to really take advantage of workbooks, chalkboards, and dry erase boards.  I even found some old sheets I had used with my daughter that were in sheet protectors.

  

  Although I put his letter of the week on his desk we still work on a variety of areas daily.  He learns numbers, as well as math.

  Of course a little tablet or computer time in addition to books, puzzles, crafts and other hands on activities helps pass the time and aid in fun learning.

Take a look at that first picture.  Do you see the ice cubes?  We played Don't Break The Ice! 

In addition to the ice game we played Cooties because cooties are insects!

I spy was played as well.  Some of these were really hard to find but he showed a great persistence in looking.

This worksheet had him coloring leaves based on some of his sight words.

We attempted to make an igloo with mini marshmallows.

I made an island for him but to my disappointment it wasn't not met with much enthusiasm.  It was yogurt I had dyed blue which he didn't care for, nor did he care for the mound of brown sugar.  I don't know what's wrong with that boy.

Lastly, we made ice cream!  He didn't quite follow through with all the necessary shaking but, he did appreciate this snack!

  My biggest struggle for letter I week was books.  On my hunt to find books this week I found there not to be a big selection.  So a lot of books had I this, or I that but only a few exact words. Ice cream, insects and a couple specific names.

So glad letter I is over.  Just before the local ice rinks opened so we will make a special trip to those.

School with Letter F

Letter F was fun.  There's a lot that can be done with food, actions and places to visit.  I'm not saying we went to a farm or rode a firetruck.  We didn't make a fan and he didn't eat frosting out the can but, we could have.

Letter writing is a definite daily and weekly thing. There is no fine-tuning.  I'm happy when it resembles the letter.  Working in between lines is a challenge but he concentrates very hard.

F is for face.  He cut out the parts, glue and applied them to the appropriate spots.

F is also for firemen! Fire hats, hoses 

and fire hydrants.  We went outside to color ours more accurately.

Our first snack was goldfish.  I could have picked up some Swedish fish but, Halloween was the other day and we don't need more candy.

F is for fireworks.  This worksheet is a favorite for him.  He likes to dab the spots with the bingo dabbers.

I found this fish counting/match cards.  If you can't figure out the numbers then you have to count and figure it out.

This is an old spiral dry erase workbook with various activities to do.

I would have liked to take him fishing but, I let him play the fishing game instead and sometimes games are more fun then waiting patiently to catch a fish.

Lastly, F is for flying.  Bats are for Halloween so this was a perfect craft for the week.  Here is the original post and instructions for this fun craft!

School with Letter E

E is for egg.  Little man helped make hard boiled eggs.  I have to laugh that he likes to cook and bake but will not try different foods.  So nope he didn't try these when they were done but, he enjoyed helping in the kitchen.

  Each week there are similar activities we do and some unique to the specific letter we are on.   Each week we read books.  Boy, letter E books were a challenge.  A lot of books with the letter E related to names of the characters. We did find some with a little creativity.

E is also for Earth!  After reading a book about Earth we made a craft.  He painted the earth and sun.  He knows the earth rotates around the sun and we read it takes 365 days so the outside of our dial has all the months labeled.

Lastly we celebrated with donuts. Hmmm, I will find a way to sneak a treat. E is for eat! 

This looks like one of our less then busy weeks but, we did continue his folder, various workbooks, writing, and music.

School with Letter D

  Moving along on our alphabet journey we have finished with the letter D. Letter  D was fun.  We played games, played with food and got outside.  We are continuing on learning sight words, reading and identifying the letter of the week when we are out and about.

D is for dog.  We don't usually walk the dog but this day we walked him. Poor dog walked miles with us.

He likes to write his letters in the sand on the sidewalk.   He will do this without any prompts from me.

He says, "I spy with my eye a letter d!"  Good job little man. No D is off limits.

Each week he gets new words.  It took us more then a week to have some words figure out.  Here he is writing: is, and, my, the and look.

He can even write dad now based on letters he knows.

Pulled out the clip cards.  Here he clips the lower case letter.  Each clip also has the letters on them.

Food fun was not skipped!

I made some yogurt d's with chocolate chips sprinkled on it and frozen for a cool treat! 

You may think I could have done more I could have played a game with him and to that statement I say...

D is for dominoes! 

Another week down! Another week of learning! He is busy with art and crafts throughout the day and I can't wait to share a project we just finished! 

We as adults are learning everyday or at least something once a week.  What did you learn or teach this week to someone?

School with Letter C

Each day or most days I try to get my son outside.  Not just to play but to explore and observe.  We look at what's around us as well as hunt for letters.  We go out looking for the letter of the week but, he also points out other letters and that's OK to.  That's part of reading.  Letter identification on everything we see and repetition brings the process full circle.  It may take to the next day or week when he catches on to a particular case lowercase letter.

We made no bake cookies because baking starts with b and we were all about the c.

No bake cookies take a little time to turn solid but if you watch them waiting goes quicker.

The sand on a walk is the perfect place to practice letter writing!

Each week I pick up a couple books with the letter as a word in the title. He has to identify the word.

C is for cutting.  He likes activities that let him use his scissors!  He is left-handed and I have to let him do his thing.

 

His cutting strips helped make c for popcorn.  Does that count?  We also used shaving cream and made cotton candy!  What a sweet week! 

We were greeted one morning by a Cicada! Perfect timing big fella! 

A peek at the desk for one day of the week.  I think he really enjoys seeing the new books and identifying the objects on it.

We finished our week with Chick Fil A. Chicken for the win!  This is one of the few places my little people eat all of their meals.
